Ear Candling

Ear candling sounds slightly strange doesn’t it?  You put a candle in your ear and it clears out your sinuses…..   Really ?   Well from my experience, yes really.

A candle (which has a filter to prevent any residue falling back into your ear) is lit & inserted into your ear. I’m with you here, before my first treatment I had to be convinced.  How will it fit in my ear?  Won’t I get burnt? Surely this is a load of baloney?!

So what does it entail I hear you ask…

You lie on your side, the therapist lights the candle and gently inserts it into your ear. It takes about 10 minutes for the candle to burn down to the red line. It feels warm and you hear a noise like sausages sizzling in a frying pan, then every so often there’s a popping noise. I have found that the more popping I hear the better result I see when the candle is opened up.

I have been having my own ears candled for over 10 years professionally by my wonderful therapist Sarah.   Every 4-5 weeks (depending on pay day), I sit back and let the candles do their work, then Sarah gives a ‘mostly’ relaxing facial massage that helps the lymphatic system drain effectively.  Now I say mostly relaxing because occasionally, if I have had a migraine or a cold, then my sinuses become severely blocked. Then, it takes Sarah’s magic fingers to release some of the pressure, which frankly hurts, but it’s one of those things where you know the pain will be worth the result.

For me, I am lost without regular candling. I have a dust allergy and regular migraines. The candling really helps. I recently had a cold/viral infection and as I went into the session I felt a lot of pressure behind my nose which meant I could not breathe through my left nasal passage. After 10 years of candling, I was still shocked at the instant result; while the candle was in my left ear I slowly regained the ability to breathe through that side. After both candles, and the massage my throat had cleared.

Some of the conditions it can help;
  • Tinnitus, ear wax, glue ear
  • Sore throats, hay fever
  • Headache, migraine
  • Rhinitis, sinusitis
  • Catarrh, asthma
  • Regulating pressure in ears and head
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Stimulates lymphatic system

I can’t say if this will help you, if nothing else it is a relaxing break from everyday life and a therapeutic facial massage after the candles. For me, I look forward to it each month and I feel the benefits.
